De-clutter – not just your office, but how about ineffectual activities, complicated systems or, dare I say it, personnel?
Start at the top and work down –may be controversial – but take a good look at your board. What can be done differently, what needs to change to give you a more positive (or profitable) outcome?
Add some 360 degree feedback from bottom to top rather than the usual top to bottom.
Throw out practices or activities that no longer ‘fit’ i.e. activities that no longer work for you. In a recession we have to think differently and more creatively to achieve a better outcome. It’s amazing what can be achieved for less cost.
Clean off the cobwebs – remove the veneer to see what’s really going on beneath the surface – allow your team to shine through. Allow more input from all team members and you will be amazed at the untapped creativity and initiative.
What undermines the perfect shine? Is it practice or people. Watch out for the ‘neg ferret’, the person who thrives on negativity. Somebody who never manages to say anything positive but can waffle on for five hours about the negative side of anything (commonly observed in disgruntled employees). This person can completely undermine an entire team.
Is there another way? Breathe fresh life into stagnant practices. If it’s not working then ask what are all the possible solutions? Totally exhaust all, include your team in this process. Prioritise solutions based on least cost, greatest impact on issue. Somewhere in that list will be the answer and choice of new direction.
What’s your showcase look like? Are you presenting your products/services in an appealing way? Does it fit what clients need in a recession? Is it too cluttered – are you offering too much? We have all seen cluttered websites where too much advertising can often mean the visitor clicks away from the site and is not enticed in for more. Can your clients see clearly what value you offering?
